The KAL Group believes education can break the cycle of poverty for learners and their families. Through our bursary programme we show that we CARE by helping dynamic and bright young leaders pursue their academic dreams.
In 2022, KAL Group provided financial support to 52 learners and students. Over the past five years, 190 learners and students received bursaries through the programme, representing an investment of R8 371 816 in educational bursaries.
This year the programme celebrates the selection of not one, but two talented bursary recipients, as Head Girls of their schools.
Danelle Jacobs
Danelle Jacobs attends Hoërskool Martin Oosthuizen in Kakamas. She excels in the creative arts, has won multiple awards for poetry and was selected as a finalist in the drama competition Gekies vir die Kollig on VIATV in 2022. She was also invited to represent high school learners at Die Burger’s Youth Leaders Conference in 2022. Danelle also performs strong academically, achieving results far above her grade average.
“The KAL Group bursary opened a new world of possibilities for me,” says Danelle. “I grew tremendously since I was awarded the bursary. The education and learning I was exposed to completely transformed me into the person I am today. Thanks to the financial support I am now able to inspire learners in my community. My hope is to give back and pay it forward in Kakamas one day.”

Johre Blommetjies
Johre Blommetjies attends La Rochelle High in Paarl. She is a gifted athlete, excelling in athletics and hockey. She achieved Boland colours in hockey and hopes to achieve SA colours in 2023. She has a keen interest in drama, taking on leading roles in various school productions, and hopes to pursue a Bachelors degree in Humanities. Her above-average academic achievements clearly reflect her ambitions to pursue tertiary studies.
“Thanks to the KAL Group academic bursary, my parents were able to support me financially with all my other extra-mural activities like sports, culture and leadership programmes,” says Johre. “All these activities outside of school helped to groom me into the confident person I am today. I hope that KAL Group continues to help many learners achieve their potential for a very long time.”

The bursary programme looks for wellrounded scholars and is not based on academic excellence only. Applications are specifically reviewed based on financial need. It’s important for KAL Group that recipients participate in sports and cultural activities to allow them to become wellrounded members in their community.
“The future of our bursary recipients is bright, and the impact of their success will be far-reaching for both their families and communities,” says Barend Sulvester, Senior Manager: Sustainability.
